The Arundel Fund celebrates the aim of the late Dr William Arundel Orchard “to teach music well”.

We are a registered charity with deductible gift recipient status.

Our Beliefs

We believe in a world where every person has access to learning music from
skilled, experienced and passionate music teachers. Our mission is to invest in music educators to strengthen musical appreciation and
enjoyment in successive generations. We aim to do that by creating educational programs and providing necessary support and resources for both
teachers and students.

Enhancing the Conservatorium Experience

The fund contributes to the core teaching infrastructure of the Conservatorium, assisting teachers to develop their skills and contribute actively to the musical life of Mitchell Conservatorium and the wider community, as well as reinforcing a positive student experience of music making and participation.

The Fund’s Aims Are To:

Encourage and support the development of performance, teaching and ensemble skills for Conservatorium teachers.

Support the Conservatorium’s ensemble programs.

Contribute to early childhood, special needs and adult educational programs.

Assist in the provision and maintenance of professional teaching facilities.

Facilitate where appropriate visits by expert tutors and performers.

Our History

The Arundel Fund was established in 2020 with a donation in memory of Dr William Arundel Orchard (1867 ̶ 1961).

The donation was premised on the principle that the Arundel Fund’s main aim was “to teach music well”. This guiding principle is the cornerstone of the work supported by The Arundel Fund.

The Mitchell Conservatorium acknowledges the outstanding work and legacy of the late Lawrence William Orchard and his family. Laurie Orchard was the grandson of Dr William Arundel Orchard and throughout his long and distinguished life continued the family’s tradition of excellence in music performance, teaching, lecturing, composition and administration, including as the inaugural Director of the Mitchell Conservatorium.

Among many honours, Laurie was awarded an OAM in the 2022 Australia Day Honours List for service to music as an educator, and to the community.
